Higgins Beach
Located about 40 minutes up the coast of Maine from York, Higgins Beach is a popular destination in the state for beautiful rocky beaches and inviting seaside weather. Locals and vacationers alike enjoy bodyboarding or surfing at Higgins Beach, but a thick wetsuit is necessary in any season other than peak summer.
The views of Saco Bay from Higgins Beach are serene and lovely, and some of the state’s best hiking is available a short distance away at Crescent Beach and Scarborough Beach State Parks.
Birch Point State Park
Birch Point State Park overlooks the beautiful Penobscot Bay in the town of Owls Head, Maine. Much of the rock on this beach is expansive and smooth, making it easy for visitors to climb and take in the views from afar.
If you’d like to access the beach, you can do so easily through the park’s front gate. Some unique rocks like gray and pink feldspar can be found near the shoreline, creating unforgettable colored reflections when the light hits just right. Traveling there from York takes about two hours.
East End Beach
If you’d like to combine some city sightseeing with your rocky beach adventure, look no further than East End Beach on Portland’s East End. This beach is much more easily approached on foot than some other rocky beaches, as the shoreline is mostly pebbles mixed with sand.
Getting to Portland’s East End from York only takes about 45 minutes with light traffic. Many visitors to this beach go for a swim during the hotter months of the year, and fishing is popular near Fish Point just a few minutes from the beach. Dogs are allowed at this beach only during fall and winter, and leashes are required in many areas.
Kettle Cove
Another stretch of beautiful rocky terrain near Higgins Beach is Kettle Cove, which can be reached from York in about 50 minutes. In addition to the diverse rocky shoreline, you’ll find all kinds of interesting sea creatures in the tide pools.
Take in the ocean views and enjoy the pleasant seaside Maine weather in summer.
